Nestled beneath the Stock Island Detention Center lies the Monroe County Animal Farm, where animals find second chances and care, all while inmates gain invaluable experiences in compassion and animal husbandry.

The Birth of the Monroe County Animal Farm
In 1994, a pressing need arose as Muscovy ducks and famous Key West chickens wreaked havoc at a nearby golf course, falling victim to passing vehicles. The farm was established to provide a safe space for these animals. After the sheriff requested they be brought over to the detention center grounds. Word quickly spread, and soon people were bringing in more unwanted or injured animals. With that, the Monroe County Animal Farm was born, driven by the mission to offer refuge to animals in need.
More than typical farm animals
Stepping onto the farm, you’ll encounter a diverse range of residents. From traditional farm animals like miniature horses, chickens, pigs, goats, and rabbits to rare reptiles and lemurs, this sanctuary hosts a variety of animal misfits. These unique creatures come from different backgrounds—they may be rescued from other zoos, fur farms, or private homes where their care became overwhelming. Unable to survive on their own, they have found a safe haven within the Monroe County Animal Farm.
Rehabilitation and Education
Beyond providing a safe space, the farm takes immense pride in its rehabilitation efforts. Animals with special needs, whether physical or emotional, receive dedicated care and attention. This is where the inmate labor from the detention center plays a vital role. Inmate involvement with animals has long been a documented therapy and rehabilitation. Additionally, the farm actively engages the community by offering educational programs that promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

At the heart of the Monroe County Animal Farm is the unwavering dedication of Farmer Jeanne Selander. With her wealth of experience and passion for animal care, Jeanne manages the farm’s operations and ensures the well-being of its residents. Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Jeanne found her calling in the Keys. Her deep-rooted love for animals, coupled with her desire to make a difference, has propelled her to lead this one-of-a-kind petting zoo/rescue/inmate work center. Under her guidance, the animals are well cared for, and the inmates receive proper training in animal care.

Visiting the Monroe County Animal Farm
The Monroe County Animal Farm warmly welcomes visitors, opening its doors to the public on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. It’s a unique opportunity for you to witness the magic firsthand. The experience is free, though donations are always appreciated to support the farm’s mission.
