What Happens to Travel Now?

The world changed in 2020, but possibly the most affected industry is travel. “Stay Home” orders are the exact opposite of a typical travel industry message. But as we emerge in this new post-Covid world what will travel look like? Here are my thoughts. (Subject to change in this weird world though)

1. Travel will return. Simply put we travel not to see. After all, we can see via virtual experiences online. Rather we travel to feel. To feel the atmosphere of our location. To feel the experiences of the locals. That desire to feel cannot be quelled overnight (even by a worldwide pandemic).

2. Travel will change. Safety will become more than a crime rating check. Safety will be about cleanliness too. Previously, the travelholic would book a maybe sketchy room for the experience of the location. Those days are over. Hotels will find their santitation added to their competitive advantage.

3. How we get there will change. It will take a while for mass transportation to be considered safe. The road trip will be rediscovered! Whether you get your kicks on Route 66 or another highway the journey will become a part of the destination.

4. Spontaneity will become possible as people embrace the microadventures in their own “backyards.” Microadventures will include afternoon activities enjoyed nearby. These activities were overlooked in the past for flights to faraway lands. Now the nearby hikes and activities will be attractive for short weekend or day trips.

5. Family and dog-friendly activities will be important. Roadtrips allows the entire family to join in on the fun. Expect more visitors who want to include the four-legged family too.

6. Recommendations will be more important than ever! The fear to travel is real for some. They will want to see that early travelers are safe and want the recommendations for clean places. The industry should look to their partners to spread the messages of their happy travelers now more than ever!
