History of “Healing Waters”
DeLeon Springs’ history whispers in the rustling leaves and gurgling water. Native Americans called it “Acuera,” meaning “Healing Waters,” drawn to its natural wonder and invigorating properties. Even Ponce de Leon, the intrepid explorer, searching for the mythical Fountain of Youth allegedly bathed in these very springs, hoping to reclaim his youthful vigor. A journal entry of Ponce De Leon from 1513 states he and his crew “ascended a large river, passing through two small rivers and three lakes, whence we came to a great boiling spring which the Indians call ‘Healing Waters.’”
Dive into Crystal-Clear Paradise
The star of the show, without a doubt, is the spring itself. Approximately 17 million gallons of water flow from the spring every day. A constant 72°F (20°C) year-round, it’s like stepping into a cool embrace on a sun-drenched Florida day. The emerald waters bubbling up from a limestone basin roughly 30 feet below the surface, creating a natural swimming pool perfect for splashing, snorkeling, or simply floating peacefully. You can even scuba into the depths below. With a guide, of course. These underwater caves can be dangerous if you don’t know where you are going.
Embrace the Lush Embrace of Nature
Beyond the spring, a lush tropical world unfolds. Hike along nature trails shaded by towering cypress trees, their gnarled roots and branches whispering secrets of the past. Or relax under the shade of the Live Oak trees planted over 150 years ago. Keep an eye out for Florida’s diverse wildlife – manatees love the springs, graceful birds soaring overhead, and yes, you are in Florida so it’s best to assume a gator is nearby. John James Audubon visited here in 1831 as he traveled across the continent cataloging America’s birds. It was here that he first saw and painted the Limkin. A large wading bird. As the waters flow out of the spring and over the small waterfall, they continue on into the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge and then onto the St. John’s River.
