Fiddlehead Brewing Company
📍 Shelburne, Vermont
Contributed by Samantha Hamilton of New England Wanderlust
Nestled in the adorable little town of Shelburne, VT, just outside of Burlington, you’ll find Fiddlehead Brewing Company. As one of the best breweries in the Green Mountain State, what sets them apart (besides their amazing brews, of course), is their efforts to give back to the local community.
Their Mastermind Double IPA was developed as a direct response to wanting to make charitable donations to the University of Vermont’s Children’s Hospital after the owner’s son received care there. And not only is their Double IPA one of the best in this region, but 25% of the sales are also donated to the Team Mastermind Fund, which supports pediatric care organizations all over the New England region, and beyond.
Since 2015, they’ve raised over $400,000 from their IPA sales, and have donated to organizations such as Make A Wish Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. At Fiddlehead, it’s never been so easy to be charitable – all you need to do is order the Mastermind Double IPA, and enjoy.
Tree House Brewing Company
📍 Sandwich, Massachussetts
Contributed by Samantha Hamilton of New England Wanderlust
One of the absolute best breweries in all of New England to visit is Tree House Brewing Company, which can be found in an idyllic location right on the beach in the charming town of Sandwich on Cape Cod. While this boutique brewery has a few locations throughout Massachusetts, their Cape Cod location is the most unique because you can enjoy one of their incredible brews while taking in the sweeping ocean views of Cape Cod Bay.
Tree House is also home to one of the top-rated New England Double IPAs on the East Coast – King Julius. During your visit, you’ll definitely want to sip this one while you’re sitting on their upper deck overlooking the ocean. When you’re ready to leave, Tree House has direct access to the beach, so combining your visit with a relaxing stroll on the shore has never tasted so good.
Pelican Brewing
📍 Pacific City, Oregon
Contributed by Jess of Uprooted Traveler
Pelican Brewing, with a handful of locations along the Oregon coast, embodies the quintessential Pacific Northwest brewery. Here, you’ll find lots of beer and other drinks made with the most beloved crop in Oregon- hops!- from standard Indian Pale Ales to a unique non-alcoholic refresher, called Sparkle Hops.
While breweries serving hoppy beers are a dime a dozen in the Pacific Northwest, the original location of Pelican is quite unique, offering the only brewery actually on an Oregon beach in Pacific City, just steps away from the famed sand dunes of Cape Kiwanda. For a truly unique experience, grab a beer and a seat on the patio, look out across the sand, and watch the sunset over the iconic Haystack Rock. While the Pacific City brewery has the most unique location, you can find locations of Pelican in three other charming coastal towns along the Oregon coast.
Hermit Thrush Brewery
📍 Brattleboro, VT
Contributed by Taima Ramsey of Poor In A Private Plane
Hermit Thrush Brewery is a must-visit if you find yourself in southern Vermont. Hermit Thrush Brewery is located in Brattleboro, VT, and is known for its unique sour beers brewed with 100% wild yeast. The brewery has been fermenting since 2014 and is always pushing the boundaries when it comes to new sour beer flavors.
The Brewhouse is fueled by wood, not fossils, which gives the beer a unique flavor that can only be found in the Brattleboro region. In addition, the brewery prides itself on using only local ingredients to create all its sour beers. Hermit Thrush uses local hops and fruits, as well as barrels from area distilleries, which results in beers that are unlike anything else on the market.
If you’re looking for a truly unique beer-drinking experience, then be sure to check out Hermit Thrush Brewery the next time you’re in Vermont.
Hermit Thrush is open Monday-Saturday from 11 am-7 pm and Sunday from 11 am-6 pm. You can purchase beer to go or enjoy a flight on-site.
Burial Beer Company
📍 Asheville, North Carolina
Contributed by Erin of Super Simple Salty Life
Burial Beer Company began as a beer blog and has grown to include four taprooms in various cities, a winery, restaurant, and a barrel-aging facility. After living in New Orleans and then experiencing the Seattle craft beer scene, the owners of Burial Beer Co. traveled in their red van across the country and settled in the funky and artistic town of Asheville, North Carolina. Here they opened their first taproom, with a mission to “connect people through immersive and introspective experiences that inspire the celebration of life and individuality”.
Burial’s Asheville taproom sits in a grouping of 100-year-old historic buildings in the heart of downtown, which were originally used in the 1930’s to house workers completing the Blue Ridge Parkway. The ever-changing beer menu has new brews released weekly ranging from lagers, pale ales, and hazy IPA’s to sours, ciders, and coffee porters, so there is a drink for any beer aficionado. Choose either inside seating or grab a table on the large covered patio or garden seating area, where the full-service kitchen offers dishes inspired by local farms and fresh produce.
Head over to Burial on a Sunday afternoon to experience “Brunch and Beats” pairing brunch-style menu specials with live local bands. Or take a guided 60-minute tour, sampling some of the current draft brews along the way. Don’t miss the colorful wall mural out front, and be sure to check out the famous red van that now resides right on the patio!
Avery Brewing Company
📍Boulder, Colorado
Contributed by Amber of Amber Everywhere
Avery Brewing Company is a popular destination for locals in Boulder, Colorado, known for their delicious brews and wonderfully relaxed tasting room. If you’ve spent some time traveling or living abroad, Avery is the sort of place you start to miss after a while. Dogs are welcome on their expansive outdoor patio, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.
Avery has many delicious beers, but make a point of trying the Maharaja IPA and the White Rascal, two very popular and unique beers that locals love. On their extensive beer list, you’ll find sours, barrel-aged stouts, and an assortment of IPAs. Locals also rave about the food; the meat-forward menu features popular dishes like pork ramen, brisket tacos, and pork green chili. If you’re vegetarian or just looking for a snack, the soft pretzels are also incredibly popular (and delicious).
Moon River Brewing Company
📍 Savannah, Georgia
Contributed by Erin Clarkson of Savannah First-Timer’s Guide
Whether you’re a beer fanatic or not, there’s no doubt Moon River Brewing is one of the more unique breweries in Savannah. It’s actually considered one of the most haunted places in the city! The building the brewery is housed in was constructed in 1821 and originally served as the City Hotel. Notable guests include the Marquis de Lafayette, wildlife sketch artist James Audubon, and war hero Winfield Scott. A lion and lioness even lived in the hotel for a while (as a marketing ploy).
Moon River Brewing Company purchased the building in the mid-90s, started a lengthy renovation process, and then began serving craft beers in April of 1999. All their brews are produced on-site in a 15-barrel copper kettle system. You can watch the brewing process as it occurs by peering in the windows from outside or while relaxing at the bar. The brewery’s own craft beer options include pale ales, IPAs, porters, and German-style lagers. They offer up a rotating list of approximately 15 other local brews, as well. Not to leave anyone out, they also serve wine, cocktails, and a decent selection of mocktails.
Moon River is a popular stop on many Savannah ghost tours and has been featured on Buzzfeed Unsolved and The Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. They also host a fun monthly drag show that includes a brunch buffet. Although they’re losing their popular outdoor beer garden soon due to new development, they do have plans to extend the restaurant portion of the business.
Hard Truth Hills
📍 Nashville, Indiana
Contributed by Pam Howard of Our Adventure is Everywhere
Part of the Hard Truth family, Quaff On! brews local craft beers in Southern Indiana. The best place to enjoy Quaff On! beers is at Hard Truth Hills, the company’s flagship location. Nestled in the hills of Brown County, Hard Truth Hills is a truly unique destination. Not only can you sample the Quaff On! beers at the restaurant or one of several bars onsite, but you can also participate in fun activities such as a distillery tour of the Hard Truth spirits, an ATV ride throughout the property, or mixology classes.
There is even a cabin on the property where you can stay the night if you want to extend your visit. The 35-acre property is a wonderful place to kick back with a great beer and enjoy the beauty of the area. Throughout the year Hard Truth Hills hosts numerous special events and concerts which can definitely enhance your visit. Aslin Beer Company
📍Northern Virginia
Contributed by Julie McCool of Fun in Fairfax VA
One of the most unique breweries in the Washington DC region, Aslin Beer Company combines a cool indoor/outdoor space with an excellent lineup of brews and a tasty pizza shop. The Northern Virginia-based brewery has an indoor taproom in Alexandria, but we prefer the location in historic downtown Herndon for its great rooftop bar. Even if you skip the rooftop, be sure to check out the psychedelic stairway that leads to it.
Aslin’s extensive beer list is heavy on IPAs and Sours with a few lagers, ales, darks, and seasonals in the mix. Popular mainstays include Mind the Hop IPA and Volcano Sauce Sour, but several double and triple IPAs push the hoppiness even further. Both of Aslin’s Virginia locations host fun events including bingo, fitness classes, and trivia nights. They also have a location in DC and a new taproom opening in Pittsburgh’s Strip District.
American Icon Brewery
📍 Vero Beach, Florida
Contributed by Pam Howard of Our Adventure is Everywhere
Located in the restored Vero Beach diesel power plant, American Icon Brewery perfectly blends history with a modern brewpub vibe. The spacious and soaring ceilings create a light-filled and comfortable setting while you sit at the bar and have beers poured for you from a repurposed generator. Surrounding the bar (and upstairs) are plenty of tables if that is your preference. Take a moment before enjoying your drinks to read the informational signs behind the bar and learn about the history of the diesel power plant and its importance to the city.
American Icon Brewery boasts several award-winning beers in a variety of styles from IPAs to Sours. Everyone can find something they’ll enjoy on the tap list. The brewery also houses a delicious restaurant with upscale pub food. In addition to the large indoor seating area, there is expansive outdoor dining with a dedicated bar, fire pits, and lawn games. Stillmank Brewery
📍 Green Bay, WI
Contributed by Lindsey Puls of Have Clothes, Will Travel
In a warehouse on the East Side of Green Bay (away from the hustle and bustle of Lambeau Field), you’ll find an incredible brewery cranking out some of the state’s most unique beers – Stillmank Brewery. Visiting Stillmank Brewery for a tasting is one of the best things to do in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Stillmank Brewery is a family-run affair that started with the founder, Brad Stillmank, creating his signature Wisco Disco. This Amber beer is brewed with a small amount of milk sugar, and it’s what gives it such a smooth body (goes great with Wisconsin cheese too).
Stillmank also has some unique “fruit” beers like the Mango Philly, which is a thicker beer and tastes more like mango juice than a beer. It’s very tasty on a hot summer day! And their guava Juiced IPA is brewed with 440 pounds of fresh guava fruit puree. It’s a nice, not-so-bitter IPA for those who “don’t like IPAs”. They also make a variety of wild fruity seltzers for those who aren’t into beer, such as “Watermelon Gummies ” and “Tropical Thai Thea Berry”. Even if you’re not a fan of seltzers, you won’t regret trying a few of these delicious concoctions!
Faubourg Brewing Company
📍 New Orleans, Louisian
Contributed by Vince DiLoreto of FittinginAdventure.com
New Orleans’ oldest operating brewery. In 1907, Valentine Merz establishes the South’s largest and most innovative brewery. To say they were met with enthusiasm would be an understatement. With a capacity of 75,000 barrels a year, the first entire output of kegs are contracted before a plant site is even secured.
Formerly known as Dixie Beer this brewery has stood the test of time after losing the brewery to Hurricane Katrina and reopening a new state-of-the-art facility with a new name, Faubourg Brewing.
Commonwealth Brewery
📍Virginia Beach, Virginia
Contributed by Abbey of Tripsonabbeyroad.com
Commonwealth Brewery in Virginia Beach is one of the most unique breweries in the USA. What makes this small brewery so cool is that it used to be an old firehouse. They have remodeled, added on, and created what today is one of the most popular places for a brew in VB. They have a games room, an outdoor patio that is heated in the winter, and a huge indoor area with plenty of space for friends and pups. They kept the original doors and open them up when the weather is nice.
Another reason why Commonwealth is so cool is that it is only a few blocks away from one of the most popular beaches in Virginia Beach, known as chicks beach. This is a spot on the Chesapeake Bay with big sandy shores and it is a local’s favorite spot to hang out during the summer. Many people stop by before or after their beach day to refresh and replenish at Commonwealth Brewery.
Swamp Head Brewery
📍 Gainesville, Florida
Contributed by Charles McCool of McCool Travel
Inherently Floridian” is the tagline of Swamp Head Brewery and visiting them is one of the best things to do in Gainesville Florida. Swamp Head was founded in 2008 and from day one they set out to be the best craft brewery in Florida and also one that the state’s residents would be proud of.
Besides using locally sourced ingredients and partnering with local farmers and businesses and a dozen charities, Swamp Head Brewery established a mission to also be a responsible brewery and to be as kind as possible to the planet—and that makes them really unique.
For instance, they reclaim as much hot water and yeast as possible and ship the finished craft beer in cans rather than bottles to save environmental resources. One year, they planted a tree for every can sold, resulting in 80,000 new trees around Gainesville and Central Florida.
Castle Danger Brewery
📍 Two Harbors, Minnesota
Contributed by Kassidy of Kassidy’s Journey
Located on the North Shore of Minnesota, along the coast of the beautiful Lake Superior, is the small town of Two Harbors. And as you roll through town, you’ll come across one of the best and most popular breweries in the state, Castle Danger Brewery. Since opening in 2011, the owners of Castle Danger have been brewing what they call, “dangerously good” brews, serving them in their taproom. Each of their beers is crafted lovingly with water straight from Lake Superior, which allows guests to have a special connection with Minnesota’s beloved great lake.
During your visit to Castle Danger Brewery, you can sit inside their large, year-round taproom, or take a seat outside on their balcony, which overlooks Lake Superior, so you can watch as the mighty waves crash into the shore. Throughout the year, food trucks line up outside of the brewery and local musicians play live music for guests to enjoy. From brews offered year-round to ones only offered seasonally, Castle Danger has a great option for all brewery lovers.
Florida Keys Brewing Company
📍 Islamorada, Florida (Florida Keys)
Contributed by Charles McCool of US Gulf Coast Travel
Much about Florida Keys Brewing Company (FKBC) seems similar to other breweries but that is because, in my mind, the others copied the success here. After all, FKBC started in 2012, a lifetime ago in the craft beer world. It is kind of like calling other music acts similar to Jimmy Buffett but Parrotheads know that JB shows are unique, vibrant, and cannot be duplicated.
Some of those unique FKBC features—and perhaps similarities—include working with local farmers, collaborating with local businesses, supporting local charities, using only fruit extracts, hosting major annual events, having an on-site vacation rental, and hosting two permanent on-site food trucks.
Speaking of Jimmy Buffett, you know Florida Keys original brewery has a major Parrohead vibe. Enjoy tropical decor everywhere at FKBC—including gorgeous beer flight boards/paddles, brightly colored interior and exterior designs, and a lush outdoor beer garden.
And the beer names are so fun and unique (and also really good). Try Smelly Butt (their IPA), Grapefruit to be Alive, Boobylicious (named for a bird, yo), and Iguana Bait (honey hibiscus Kolsch). Iguana Bait is probably the most popular craft beer south of Miami but also be sure to try the seasonal 4/20 version.
Buoy Beer Company
📍 Astoria, Oregon
Contributed by Jess of Uprooted Traveler
Buoy Beer Company is located in Astoria, one of the most unique Oregon Coast towns that offers a quirky mix of industrial grittiness with a smidge of hipster thrown in. And Buoy is kind of the perfect example of that- it’s housed in a building that was constructed in 1924 as a feed and grain warehouse and throughout the years, has served as everything from a fish processing plant to a mink feed production plant. The old wooden building juts out over the Columbia River, providing views of cargo ships as they chug out to see and plenty of sea lions and harbor seals. In fact, the building even has a glass window in the floor so you can keep an eye out for a new seal friend playing in the water below!
Unfortunately, one of Buoy’s buildings along the river collapsed in July 2022, so the original building is currently closed. While they work to reopen it, Buoy is still open and serving up a healthy mixture of beloved old classics, like pilsners and cream ale, with funky, experimental brews, like a cranberry sour or a modern take on Oktoberfest.
Honolulu Beerworks
📍 Honolulu, Hawaii
Contributed by Noel with Oahu Travel Now
One of the best craft breweries in the Honolulu area is the Honolulu Beerworks located around the Kaka’ako district. This area around Kaka’ako is hip and fun with colorful street art, cool restaurants and hang-out spots, and craft breweries like the Honolulu Beerworks.
With a very youthful and hip vibe, the interiors are open air and there are areas for outdoor seating and some fun games you can also play outdoors. The brewpub is busy during happy hour and dinner timeframe along with weekend time frames. Typically they serve their popular tasting menu or individual craft beers of IPA, Ale, Stout, and many craft beers with tropical flavors with mango, coconut, coffee raspberry, rainbow sherbert, and ongoing new and seasonal blends they place on their tasting menus for you to try.
They offer food items and even cocktail pairings with their full bar for you to enjoy beyond the beer-tasting experience.
