That’s what they claim.  And while we only tried a few, I believe them. We stopped for a quick bite to eat and to try a beer flight. They did not disappoint.

Started 23 years ago, they are the oldest microbrewery in Las Cruces, NM. Their IPA’s are a consistent winner in the state’s annual IPA challenge.  But, this is only a start to what they offer.  A rotating selection of 25 ales and lagers is also available. For the designated driver, or for those too young to enjoy a nice, cold beer, there is a house-brewed root beer. On a hot afternoon, try the hard cider made from apples and pears.  With the batches consisting of approximately 100 gallons, each glass is at the peak of freshness.

Because sustainable living is so important now, High Desert is solar powered.  And has been since 2011.

Now, the part you’ve been waiting for.  Or, at least the part I was waiting for during our visit…the tasting flight.

First up was the Peach Wheat IPA.  The hoppiness of the beer offset the peach slightly.  I’m fine with this as I normally don’t go for a fruited beer.  But, I thought it tasted great and would not hesitate to order it again.

Because it is December, we had to try the holiday cerveza.  Which is it’s name.  Well, actually, Cerveza Holiday.  Light and crisp, it would perfectly round out a holiday meal with some green chiles. By the way, chiles are a mandatory part of a meal.  Angela has told me this time and again. I won’t argue.

The strongest beer tried was the White Walker Stout.  I’m not sure if this was a nod to Game of Thrones. Our bartender just mentioned because it was a white beer instead of the usual darker color of stouts.  Regardless, it was good. It was strong. And it helped take some of the Chile sting out of my mouth.

Last, and the one which I ordered a pint of, is the Blood-Orange Cranberry Sour.  High Desert’s high quality brews caused me to rethink all my misconceptions. Not only do I usually steer away from fruited beers, neither do I go for sours. I’m glad I branched out from the ordinary and tried them.  The combination of blood orange and cranberry was terrific. It was a great midday beer to have with lunch.  Not heavy at all and quite refreshing.

Every time we have a flight, we order (and usually split) something from the menu.  You know it has to have green chiles.  Especially because Hatch is right down the road growing the world famous peppers.  We went with the green chile cheese fries.  To Angela, they weren’t that hot.  I begged to differ.  While not too much for me to handle, I was glad to have the beers to cool my mouth.

For any beer enthusiast, a stop at High Desert Brewing Company is a must on your visit to Las Cruces.  The small batches truly reflect the care put into their beer. Stop in and try a flight and make sure to grab something off the menu.  But make sure it has the chiles.
